While there are no right or wrong ways to meditate, here are 5 pointers that will help you get started.

1. Make it a habit – The best would be to be meditate twice a day, before bed and in the morning. But start by making small changes in your routine. If you make a big commitment to meditate two hours a day when starting from not meditating at all will lead you down the path of failure. Don’t start too big – you might want to start meditating once a day for 20 min, and work your way up from there. Even these short meditation sessions will bring you amazing benefits.

2. Have a comfortable safe place to meditate – Use a same, comfortable place, where you will not be interrupted. One where you feel calm and safe will help you focus and concentrate. It will be easier to practice within familiar surroundings so that nothing can distract you.

3. Breathe Properly – Many of us don’t know it, but we do not breathe properly. To use your lungs to full capacity, its important to breathe from your diaphragm. When you take a deep breath in, your stomach should expand, and when you exhale, start from the bottom and push the air out with your diaphragm. If you find your shoulders moving up and down, you are breathing incorrectly.

4. Have a purpose – Meditation is an active practice. Its important to have a goal of each meditation, that way you know what to focus on. It can be as simple as relaxation, changing habits, realizing a goal or for more advanced meditators, you can use this time to delve into your subconscious and eliminate negative beliefs, find your purpose in life. The possibilities are endless.

5. Be sure to bring your mind back to focus when it wanders – its inevitable for beginners. Your mind will wander and thats ok. Just gently bring it back to focus and don’t be too hard on yourself. Over time it will become easier to meditate.
