A Discussion On Sinusitis And Why Its Foolish To Delay Treatment

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the tissue lining the paranasal sinuses. Normally, the sinuses are filled with air, and they help in decreasing the relative weight of the front of the skull, and aid in the humidification and heating of inhaled air. When these spaces are blocked and filled with mucus, it becomes a breeding ground for germs which can later cause infection and inflammation. Sinus infection symptoms often involve pain or fullness arising from the face, stuffy or runny nose, and decreased sense of smell. Also, those who experience sinus infections also present with fever, listlessness, and sometimes even halitosis, and tooth aches.

When you feel any of these sinus infection symptoms, it is best to visit your physician promptly to start treatment. Treatment for sinusitis can be conservative, like nasal irrigation, or aggressive, as in surgery. Between the two are several other treatment modalities. Nasal irrigation is the practice of introducing warm, saline to one nostril and letting it flow to the other to clear out debris and excess mucus. This practice benefits acute and chronic sinusitis sufferers.

Treatment for acute sinusitis may also include use of decongestants, steam inhalations, and antibiotics. Persistent and recurring cases of sinus problems are also managed by steam inhalations and moist heat application, like placing a warm towel over the sinus region. Those who feel uncomfortable about nasal irrigation can opt for nasal drops and sprays which are usually saline solutions that come with or without steroids. Antihistamines are also often used if allergy is suspected. Antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals may be given as well to treat flare ups of chronic sinus problems.

Refraining from smoking and staying around people who smoke is also necessary to prevent and cure sinusitis. Although there is no special diet required, drinking extra fluids will help thin secretions for easier clearance. Healthcare providers will reserve surgical intervention if less invasive measures do not bring in any relief, or if performing surgery can make the patient less susceptible to sinusitis, just like widening sinus passageways through endoscopic or balloon sinuplasty.

Delaying sinus treatment for sinusitis is unnecessarily prolonging the pain and discomfort you are suffering from. There are well-documented cases of sinusitis that have become more difficult to manage because of poor or no medical management. Complications can include infections affecting proximate structures like the ear canal and throat. Even more serious is that untreated sinusitis cases can put you at risk of developing meningitis and brain abscesses which are harder and more expensive to manage, and at the same time can leave you with a permanent disability or result to premature death.
