Hair Sun Protection: The Key to Healthy Sun-Kissed Locks

Posted by herbmaster on Jul 31, 2009 in Uncategorized

Hair sun protection is likely one of the most neglected forms of sun protection. If you are like most people, you spend most of the year looking forward to summer. However, your hair probably does not. Many people look forward to getting that light, airy sun-glow each summer, but that beach bunny bleach-out can be hard on your hair. Natural sun-kissed highlights can deteriorate quickly into dried-out split ends if you do not protect your hair.

Here are some great tips for effective hair sun protection:

* Moisturize - Pool chemicals and salt from the ocean are incredibly destructive when it comes to your hair. The most effective way to get good hair sun protection is to constantly moisturize. Like skin, hair needs a lot of moisture to resist damage. Use a leave-in conditioner or spray your hair with a weak combo of your regular conditioner and water each time you exit the pool or ocean.

* Keep an eye out for Octyl Methyoxycinnamate - Generally, long chemical names to not mean good news for your hair. However, octyl methyoxycinnamate indicates that you are dealing with some serious SPF. Also, products that contain the antioxidant vitamins A, E and C will help defend your hair from free radicals. Free radicals are highly charged molecules that can harm cells.

* Be Sure to Cover Up - A protective barrier between the sun and your hair is the best form of hair sun protection. Throw a big beach hat on for a glamorous, fully protected look. This is vitally important when the sun is strongest – between 10 AM and 3 PM.

* Put Up Your Hair - A knot or pony tail will protect the majority of your hair from unexpected sun exposure. Smooth it back with a quick dollop of sunscreen for a quick and convenient look.

Avoid damaged locks by protecting your hair. Good hair sun protection will help you get your tresses through the summer fun and into fall.
