One of the oldest elixirs known to man in a long line of the curative arts, is the practice of immersing oneself in warm, mineral rich spa waters. There is a long epicurean tradition that goes back to pre-Greek and Roman times that attests to the calming and revitalizing aspects of these hot springs of delight. It was thought to be one of the mysteries of the Gods that accounted for these seemingly miraculous waters that appeared to derive their heat from hidden chambers underground. Portents and prognostications were often foretold while the waters warmed the wise men of the era. Homer writes that the ancient Greeks bathed in hot springs as early as 500 BC. There are many tales of political intrigue and romantic drama that find their source in inspiration while bathing in the hot springs. The city of Bath in England gets its name from the famous hot springs found there. Historians of the practice note that spa popularity usually coincides with cultures that have leisure time on their hands to pursue the cures for the many woes that plagued them while not at their leisure. The ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians and Minoan cultures found value in the baths as a form of social cohesion as well as seeking relief from various diseases and afflictions.
There are perhaps more reasons today why people continue this form of therapy following centuries of this exquisite tradition. Modern spa waters act as therapeutic treatments dealing with everything from travel related jet lag to teenage acne and many ailments and afflictions in between. In the past, many things that were not thought treatable by spa water are now treated successfully at spas. Backaches, sports injuries, office politics stress, trying to quit smoking? Bring em all on!
Otherwise known as Hydrotherapy the mineral laden waters often warmed by thermal earth forces that rise from deep within earth’s mantle use the physical properties of pressure, temperature and the chemical properties of the minerals themselves for therapeutic application to much of what troubles the human body. The practice of balneotherapy uses hot springs, both sea water or mineral waters, to revitalize circulation, bolster the immune system, and otherwise invigorate the body constitution.
The modern spa combines some of the lore and legend of ancient traditions and modern mechanical wonders like the swirling waters of mechanically generated Jacuzzis. The main feature though, in the modern as well as the ancient spa, has always centered around the precious heated waters with their amazing abilities to calm and cure many of man’s ailments.

A Plan to Relax and Be Happy
Life is getting more and more difficult. Every day the stress levels are increasing all around us. If these stress levels are allowed to increase, then the world around us can cause us to become even more uptight and unhappy. More and more people are becoming sick and angry. Relaxing is the answer. It is important to find a way to relax in these stressful times. Here is a plan that has been proven to work.
First, find someone who is having a worse time than you are and find a way to help them relax and relieve some of their stress. When you stop looking at yourself and pay attention to someone else, you will not only be relaxed and free from stress, but you will also be happy. Here are some of the things that you might want to consider doing to help your friend relax.
Take them out to lunch. It is always nice to get out into a new environment. Go out for a walk. Getting out in the fresh air to talk will help them feel better. Another great idea would be to spend a few dollars and take them to a day spa, where they can spend the day being pampered, with a nice massage and beauty treatment. While you are there, you might as well enjoy being pampered too. Take a few classes together. A good martial arts class is excellent for relaxation. They teach you how to control the anger and anxiety that your physical body is experiencing due to stress. All of the energy that you spend kicking and punching will also help release the stress and anger that has been built up over time.
As your friend’s stress level begins to drop and they truly begin to relax, you will have a wonderful, happy feeling come over you, knowing that you helped someone. Soon you will relax as your own stress melts away.
After you take your friend home, you may want to get into a nice, hot bubble bath and listen to some soft music. Think about how good it felt to help your friend. Now you are ready to go out and face the stress filled world, refreshed, relaxed and happy. Who knows? Maybe one day when you are having a difficult day, a friend might come to your door and take you to the spa for the day.

In addition to traditional spa services such as massages and facials, some spas offer access to a mineral bath. If you do not care for massages, a soothing bath can be a great alternative. A spa bath is a full body treatment, but you have control over the entire experience. Of course, if you enjoy massages, you can give yourself a special treat by booking a spa package that covers both services. After your muscles have been worked and soothed, you can slip into a warm mineral bath to finish your day. A trip to a spa with a bath also makes a great gift for anyone who deserves a day of relaxation.
Because the mineral bath has a special pH, you will most likely be asked to rinse off in the shower before entering the bath. If you forget to bring your own towel from home, you might be asked to rent one from the spa facility. This is usually a small fee, but you might be asked to leave a form of id at the desk or pay a deposit fee.
Mineral baths are not only relaxing, but they can also be good for you as well. If the spa bath is supplied by a natural spring, the water should be full of minerals that can improve the look and feel of your skin and hair.
Although every spa is different, most spas that have mineral baths offer many other services as well. You will be able to start your day with a manicure or pedicure, spend time in the baths, and then have a light spa lunch before you return to the real world.
Most spas that have special baths have several pools of varying temperature. There is usually a larger pool of medium temperature, a hot tub, and a cold plunge pool. The cold plunge pool can be particularly refreshing if you jump into it after relaxing in a hot sauna. Never enter a very hot tub or a very cold one if you feel faint, dizzy, or tired. If you have a heart condition or a circulation problem, talk to your doctor about your spa plans before you book your next spa day package. For most healthy individuals, however, a trip to the baths can be an enjoyable and relaxing experience.
